This
seemingly simple process of copying files from your Personal computers
hard disk to your server is quite irritating for the first time, but,
easiest part later. Generally the servers provide FTP (File Transfer
Protocol) access to upload files. Although, you can do this by your
browser also, it is best advised that you download a good FTP software
to do this. A good example is Cute
FTP . Download the shareware version of this software and install it on your personal
computer. You will require following information to configure most of
the FTP programs:
-
Site
Title: Give it any name you want, this is for your reference
-
FTP
server address, username, password: These are provided by your
server's webmaster
-
Folder
or Directory name: There is a default directory where you will
have to upload your index.html file. This is provided by the
server's webmaster. Thereafter you can create any number of sub
directories to upload your files to manage them and link them from
index.html file.
-
For
the rest, leave them as default.
Fill
up the above information in the FTP software and connect to the
server. Generally, FTP software divide the screen into two section,
one section shows files on your PC, other on your server. You can both
upload or download the files.
Here
are some tips to make the job easier for you
-
Name
your first file, or home page as index.html. Generally the servers
will show this file when some types www.yourname.com in their
browsers. Some servers also allow index.html, main.html,
homepage.html etc. The file name extension can also be .htm, it
hardly matters, so don't worry about it. Some also allow, .shtml,
.cgi, .asp etc
-
Name
all your files in lower case, Linux and UNIX are a case sensitive
operating systems, so Main.htm is not same as main.htm
-
Keep
the files and directory names on the server same as that on your
Hard Disk.
